Clearing the air.

Recent events have come to my attention, which make it clear that it is time to shed a bright light on ugly words that have been allowed to thrive in shadow. After thinking on it, consulting trusted friends, and making sure I had all of my facts straight, I have come to the conclusion that it is better to speak up, publicly, on record, and have my cards on the table rather than continue to have my name and reputation maligned in private.

Rumors have been flying around for far too long now, and it's time that they were flushed out by light and transparency. Mutual acquaintances have let me know that another designer is badmouthing me to people I respect, in a way that makes them uncomfortable. Other friends on a city-specific crafting group have told me that the same designer is claiming to have a "copycat stalker." Still more, customers have relayed to me that she has implied that I am copying her work. This might seem like small potatoes or mindless drama to some, but when my name is being maligned to people I respect, I must speak up to defend myself, both as a person and an artist.

So, time for some facts! The following list is a verifiable timeline of some things that have been in controversy:

-- My line of copper electroplated leaf necklaces, featuring leaves with a cascade of gemstones, pearls, and crystal, launched in October 2008. They were re-issued in 2009, and have been every year since, featuring predominantly in my Autumn update.

-- I had also done a Midsummer Night's Dream line in February 2009 and a lumi-glass "Delicates" collection in October 2008.

-- I launched vintage Halloween image pendants with asymmetrical chain danglies in October 2008.

-- Also included in the October 2008 collection was Black Widow, a crackled agate necklace with spider. There were also matching earrings. Both have re-occurred every year since.

-- Yule '08 update consisted of silvered branches, silver electroplated leaf necklaces, and blown glass ornament earrings. They debuted as a collection of silver and ice, and they have repeated every year since.

-- My "Guess the Gemstone" contest debuted in March 2009 and continued throughout the year and
into 2010.

-- In July 2009, I debuted a line of intent necklaces which I had been researching/developing for a few months for the seller Whitemagic. About that time a) Whitemagic passed on the line (and then formulated a cheaper knock-off line which she's selling to this day), and b) For Strange Women was featured on the Etsy front page. I put the 10 or so prototypes on my site for sale, as they were already complete. The other designer then contacted me and said there had "been talk" that my pendants were too close to For Strange Women's customizable herbal pendants. I explained that I was having a hard time finding a small bottle pendant that was water tight and therefore safe to house oils securely, as corked bottles would not work for my purpose. It was a lack of options at the time which presumably led to us choosing the same bottle for our talismans. At any rate, I still haven't found a suitable replacement, so I haven't put any new ones for sale since. Sometimes that's just the right thing to do.

-- The first teasers for my faery wings were in January '10. The techniques were learned from Cynthia Thornton's Enchanted Adornments, and although I have been steadily developing my own wing line with crystal and color, iridescent materials, and differing wing shapes, I will forever be grateful and glad to give her credit for Woodland Wings tutorial, and for inspiring me to work with resin.

-- My PMC leaves debuted in July '10. Not too plussed over this, since leaves are common for PMC, but just in case you were wondering.

-- Halloween '10, posted in early September, included silver bat wings, both necklaces & earrings, crafted with wire and resin. Note the shape.

-- The first iteration of 'Persephone Descending' was sold in July '11.

No, I am not copying her. There's no way I could be, unless I've got a time machine under wraps. And no, the TARDIS won't fit under my bed. To prove that I have not been copying her, one must look no further than our Etsy sales histories. Match up the first listing/sales dates of the similar items. Surprising patterns may emerge. Trust me when I say that my sold item history on Etsy speaks more strongly against my copying her than anything else I could possibly say on the matter. Although customer quotes like "I wanted to buy those earrings from her, but then I realized I already had the same pair from you last year" do a pretty good job, too.

To my knowledge, Etsy sales histories cannot be deleted or tampered with, so when in doubt, check to see who posted/sold it first. Do some digging, verify the facts for yourself. It's all in the open through an unbiased third party. And hey, sometimes when you search through histories, you find really interesting stuff.

Also, I often post previews on my Twitter and Flickr account. Many things, like my faery wings line, were previewed weeks to months ahead of launch. All of this is public record and dated at the time of upload.

To her claim that I am "targeting" her: jewelry making, especially on Etsy, is a small backyard. And when an acquaintance who is selling on the same platform as I sell does something untoward, it's easy to see and notice, as it's in our shared backyard. To boot, she used to be on my friends-list, where we had been mutually friended. Her updates would show up on my friends-page. It's hard to "target" something that shows up over your morning cuppa joe, you know? Now, we've not been friendly for two years now, but I do have customers/friends who email me when something looks suspicious. Sometimes it looks suspicious to me, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes, it's a matter of common supplies, and some times it's more concerning than that. All I can do is present what factual information I have, and draw my own conclusions.

One of the main reasons I've not discussed this in the open for so long is that I am aware that we have a not inconsiderable customer base overlap. Please know that I am in no way asking anyone to take sides or calling for any action. I simply wanted to provide information and defend myself against unfounded accusations.

Barring major incident or need of clarification, I consider this post to be my final word on the topic, and I swear whatever oath necessary that my words here, to the best of my knowledge, are 100% factual and true. If I find that I have misconstrued a fact (launch dates, etc), I will amend the post to reflect that in good faith. Wings and Things!

The first of my designs with butterfly wings-- well, in this case, Sunset Moth wings-- are live in the shop. I'd been experimenting with wings since about January on methods to seal the wings properly for resin applications. Mod Podge turned brilliant blue morpho wings velvety green. Diamond Glaze rendered them mottled brown. Direct resin application stole away all color. But after seeing Jen Cushman's designs with wings in her new book Explore, Create, Resinate, I knew it could be done SOMEHOW, and so I redoubled my efforts. With success!

And, as luck would have it, I had the good fortune to bump into Jane Wynn of Wynn Studio at our local metal shop, and she related to me the sealing method she'd devised for sealing wings in her book, Alterered Curiositie s. I will definitely have to experiment with that, as well!

In any case, a new update of 50 items is live in the shop-- wings, wirework, resin, the works!

As some of you know, I recently became a member of BEST-- the Baltimore Etsy Street Team. One of the events that our team is participating in the area is the Maryland SPCA's March For The Animals. This effort was spearheaded by the lovely Brooke of FuzzyMug.

Animal rescue and adoption is a cause close to my heart. Every kitty I have ever had has been a rescue kitty, whether they came off the street or from a shelter. The MD SPCA actually works very closely with BARCS (from which we got our Nox kitty) in giving the animals the best possible care while they await adoption.

So, in the last 24 hours, I've been asked a bunch of questions about my life as a jewelry artist & the path that led me here. Sounds like a work blog post to me!

What do you love most about making jewelry?

The challenge, I think. Fun, casual stuff is a good stress-reliever. I love the satisfaction of a five minute pair of earrings. But the more involved stuff-- techniques that requires sculpting, firing, mixing, hammering... all of that is stuff I had no idea I'd be doing two years ago. And so every time I finish something difficult, or I use a new skill, I have a deeply satisfying moment of "I made that," which is addictive, and just pushes me to go further. To learn more. And as a double-Virgo who would gladly be an eternal student if only I had the $$$, having an infinite number of new things to learn and try is totally exciting.

How did you first begin to make jewelry?

My aunt took me into Beadazzled (one of our local bead shops) when I was about 12 years old. I remember being totally enchanted by the lampwork beads, and the goldstone beads. So glittery! So shiny! She showed me the basic things about stringing. Like all 12 year olds, I was madly obsessed for a summer, then forgot all about it. I never did buy any beaded jewelry from that point on, though, because after examining the craftsmanship, I always concluded that I could make my own, if only I were less lazy.

After college, I went through a rough breakup. I needed something to keep my hands and mind occupied. I started buying beads at JoAnn's and Etsy. When stringing proved insufficient to create the ideas in my head, I bought my first spool of craft wire. No joke, I used garden snips as my wirecutters.

Then my roommate told me about this shop called Terra Firma a mile away, where I found all the tools I needed. Not too long after that, I found myself working there. Being surrounded by such creative people and having such an amazing resource pushed me into new mediums (resin, PMC, metal etching) and totally rocked my world-- in a good way!

Do you have a studio?

I do have a small home studio that I work from. It's got a big, wide desk, a bookshelf where I keep my books and small altar, a big inspiration board for fresh images and color palettes. Shelves have boxes full of resins, ribbons, patina supplies, soldering supplies, mandrels. On working nights, it looks pretty much like this:

Did you go to school to learn how to make jewelry?

I did not go to school for jewlerymaking. I DID go to an arts school, but for vocal music! So I've always been surrounded by art, even if this is a relatively new medium for me. Most of what I've learned has been either self-taught through doodling around or learned from books and tutorials I've purchased. I've only just begun soldering, though, and that is something I would very much like to take a class on. Now that I'm a member of the Baltimore Etsy Street Team (BEST), I have lots of team-members who have strong backgrounds in traditional metalsmithing, so I have no doubt I'll get the best guidance a girl could have as I continue my artistic journey!

The rising cost of silver and my shipping policy.

Hello all! I'm writing today about a necessary but unpleasant aspect of the jewelery biz.

When I opened Sihaya Designs three years ago, sterling silver was somewhere around $13 per ounce. During my brief time in Albuquerque, since I was so close to one of the US's largest silver suppliers, I could even get it as low as $11 per oz. My prices were so reasonable because rather than sail on that deal, I passed the savings directly on to you, my customers.

Sadly, for the last two years, sterling silver (all metals, really), have been steadily on the rise. I work for a metals retailer part-time, so I get all of my metal at wholesale prices / at cost. The cheapest price I can get on sterling silver, per ounce, is $43. Ouch! These prices may continue to rise for the foreseeable future.

As I do a lot of my work in sterling silver, I am now faced with having to raise some of my prices to reflect this. The older work in my shop will remain as-is, as this price change will only effect new stock.

As always, I strive to create affordable artisan jewelry for all to enjoy, and am saddened at this necessary evil.

As a trade-off, I am changing my shipping prices-- lowering them, in-fact. All shipping is now $4 per item ($.20 per extra item). Nothing will change in regards to my shipping presentation: all items will still arrive gift-boxed, in a bubble mailer with delivery confirmation on all domestic orders. Domestically, all orders $150 and over will receive complimentary shipping insurance. You may always inquire about expedited shipping or shipping insurance on all other orders.

Thank you so much for your understanding. If you see an item you absolutely must have but cannot afford at the moment, I do offer holds on items for short periods of time, as well as "layaway" style payment for higher ticket items. We can work something out!

It's pretty rare that I actually sketch out a design before I sit down at the bench. I tend to be a very "by feel" designer-- my usual process is to spread out all of my beads in front of me, pick a focal stone or general theme, and then experiment until I figure out what the piece is supposed to be.

However, Tuesday night found me with a whole lot of pent up creative energy and almost no silver wire! There was an ice storm here in Baltimore, and the shop where I get my silver, Terra Firma, was closed. Frustrated, I picked up a pencil and began to sketch all the things I would make if only I had the silver onhand. And here is the draft of "Persephone Rising," a large collarpiece bedecked with AA blood red garnets, plus a pair of matching earrings.

Wednesday, hallelujah, the shop was back open, and I raced in to restock my 16, 18, and 26 guage silver wire, as well as to pick up some key embellishments. I worked all day on this necklace yesterday.

First, I formed the spine of the necklace from heavy sterling wire, hammered it flat, and then wove it together with thinner sterling wire. Next, I embellished with tiny sterling silver balls, to emphasize the soft loops and swirls. After that, I formed the clasp, a lovely S-clasp that echoes the swirls of the neckpiece.

The garnets came next-- I had initially planned on five garnets for the necklace, but in the end, three looked more balanced, especially when paired with the garnet rounds that adorn the chain.

And then I repeated the process to create the matching earrings, which thankfully didn't take nearly as long as the necklace to create!

This morning, I antiqued the entire piece in a solution of liver of sulfur to get a beautiful dark finish. The metal was hand-polished to a high-contrast finish with my favorite satin-finish polishing cloths, and it's ready to be presented to you!

A Miracle (and a shipping update!)

Woo hoo! After being told to prepare for the worst, we were stunned to learn (after a $560 spinal tap) that Olive does NOT have lymphoma!

In fact, our vet is just as surprised, as it appears she has a rare spinal condition he's never seen in cats-- it's called facet proliferation, and you usually see it in large breed dogs like mastiffs and great danes... not my teeny little dwarf cat! Even better, it may be surgically treatable, though he's going to pass her MRI around to other neurologists for study before he recommends a course of action. In the meanwhile, Olive is on steroids to reduce inflammation around her spinal cord.

So. After a rollercoaster of emotions, we are overcome with joy to know that our little Olivebeans will be with us for quite awhile! In fact, the word that our vet used was "miracle."

Thank you again for everything you've done to help us figure out the mystery of our little kitty cat and get her the very best care that we can manage. Without the enormous response, we would not have been able to afford the now $2,600 and counting in diagnostics for her.

Jason and I have been working on order packing all day long and we will continue into tomorrow. The vast majority of orders placed in the last two weeks will be shipped tomorrow afternoon.

Update on Olive

Olive's MRI showed that there were no bone abnormalities. The last step is to check for a very likely lymphoma. Jason and I have canceled our trip to get her the necessary spinal tap on Monday. If the diagnosis is lymphoma, and our vet seems fairly certain that it will be, prognosis is poor.

Jason and I will be shipping orders beginning on Tuesday. We thank you so much for your patience during this difficult time, and ask that you please convo us on Etsy if you need your shipping upgraded to priority due to the delay-- we will gladly do this gratis.

An Important Note on Shipping!

As many of you are aware, my friends and my community pulled together to pull off a miracle for my family this week. My cat, Olive, needs an expensive MRI and also potential surgery. This will cost us thousands of dollars. Sihaya Designs was promoted all over the web by friends, family, friendsfriends, and concerned kitty lovers across the globe.

The result? Olive's MRI is PAID FOR. Her appointment for a preliminary exam is tomorrow, Thursday. The MRI will be scheduled after. Any monies not spent on the MRI will be put towards her treatment, be that surgery or ongoing medication. We cannot thank you enough.

This massive groundswell of orders has also left us with an unprecedented shipping queue. I have conscripted my husband into helping pack these orders. Even so, this falls right upon the doorstep of a weeklong trip out of the state. Here are some important shipping notes we have to share with you:

-- The shipping queue is awe-inspiring. Like I said, Jason and I will be using every spare moment to pack orders, and I will be magically CREATING time to finish custom orders. We hope to have everything that's not a very recent custom order shipped out by the end of next week. This will probably mean shipping while we are on the road.

-- If your order included an alteration of any sort, it may take a few extra days or be pushed further towards the end of the queue. I will be taking a small toolkit with me on the trip so I can work on alterations.

-- If you ordered more than one time to the same shipping address and I don't immediately refund you, *please* send me an Etsy convo reminding me to do so. I'm usually really on top of this, but with this kind of unprecedented order queue, something may fall through the cracks due to sheer overwhelmingness-osity. Keep me honest, please. Remind me. I will be happy to refund any and all shipping overages.

To Kiln or not To Kiln?

So, I've been reading up on precious metal clay of late. It's always been on my list of things I'd like to attempt someday, because the results are absolutely stunning. I also like how it allows you to create your own fine silver findings-- ones that are not mass-produced, thus ensuring that your piece will be more unique. I've also been reading some of Irina Miech's instructional books on the topic, and some of the sample projects she walks you through are right up my alley, style-wise. She has a very naturalistic take, and one project even included little faerie faces! So perfect.

Anyway, my two main hesitations have been a) I have never taken a sculpting class and 2) I have no kiln. The first is utterly rectifiable, especially considering my husband, one of my best friends, and a ton of my other friends are trained artists. There are affordable classes around and I am sure to have good tutelage. The second... well, I'm not going to have room for a kiln so long as I'm living in an apartment. BUT! Things, they are a changin', and now there's a product on the market called the Hot Pot that will allow small pieces to be fired without a kiln. And what's better, it's not exorbitantly expensive. It will allow me to try my hand with small pieces (leaves, there will be leaves!) before I decide to seek out studio spaces where I have the use of a full-scale kiln.

Anywho, that's where I am right now. I've been spending the last year or so branching out into many new mediums, and I love that it gives me greater freedom and more variety in my work. My copper etched pieces are right around the corner, so keep a look out for those as well!

A very recent observation and discussion with a fellow artist brought up some thoughts I'd like to work through.

From time to time, we might find ourselves having created something strikingly similar to another artist's work without having meant to have done so. Or you may be browsing another artist's shop and have a "Hey! That looks a whole lot like my...." moment. For the most part, it's coincidence. After all, a lot of popular imagery-- birds, wings, hearts-- are popular specifically because they're universal. Themes (*CoughSteampunkCough*) become popular and inspire the masses. So, overlap happens. Believe me, it happens, and people talk about it, and then eventually things sort themselves out.

In the jewelry community, a lot of times overlap occurs because we are working from the same supplies, which can create some similarities. This makes innovation with common supplies even more laudable. For instance, have you seen what the supremely talented Kythryne of Wyrding Studios has been doing with electroplated leaves lately? Now, I work with electroplated leaves a lot, too, and when I saw these pieces, the first thing I thought was how wonderfully she had managed to make the element, to my knowledge, her own. Kyth has unique style that sets her apart from even other artists who wire wrap in a similar way. She clearly took pains to distinguish her take on electroplated leaves from the many other interpretations currently available on the market, and she did so in a way that made sense within the context of her brand.

As for me, I strive to make my finished products pieces that speak to me, uniquely, and also make sense within the context of my brand. Doing so takes a lot of effort, honestly, but it's worth it because my brand is, in essence, my livelihood and name. It's my ability to stock my fridge as well as my reputation in the community.

On the occasions where I purchase and use project books and tutorials by other artists to expand the scope of my work, I not only give credit where credit is due, but I also try to put my own mark on the finished product. For instance, in the Inara necklace was adapted from a pattern by Louise Jeremich, which was published in a jewelry inspirations book that I own. When I made my version, I changed the silhouette to a deep V instead of a wavier one. I changed the necklace from a two strand to one to fit the new silhouette. I changed the arrangement of some of the spirals. I added my own embellishments. And in the end, I still gave credit for the use of the tutorial which inspired me, despite the fact that the two finished products look, to my eye, different. I am satisfied that the piece not only reflects the techniques and design of its originator, but also my own artistic voice and modifications.

(This is not to say that copying directly from a tutorial is bad and that I'm above it or anything-- if that artist is giving you the permission to use their finished design with proper credit, that is totally okay and honest.)

That said, in such a tightly-knit and supportive artistic community, I continually find myself evaluating my work in the context of the bigger picture. I am constantly striving to find ways to expand the scope of my work without being derivative of others' work. I would never attempt to imitate another artist's finished product without their consent. For all that I love Kyth's work, if I took my admiration of her style and then tried to wire wrap those leaves in the exact same way, I am not only invalidating the work that she has put in to make her pieces reflect her artistic voice, but I may also be taking money out of her pocket as the result of my derivation. This directly impacts her livelihood. Obviously, this is a problem, however innocent and well-intended it may be.

With this in mind, I think we could all stand to think a little more about our own voices and evaluate how strongly our work is influenced by the work of others, and how it may affect those from whom we draw our "inspiration." There are certainly times wherein imitation is not the sincerest form of flattery.
Ultimately, I have adopted the words of the lovely Judy Garland as my mantra:

"Be a first rate version of yourself, not a second rate version of someone else."

It may have become a cliche, but it is still so, so true.

Squeeeeeee! I can now tell you about one of the collaborations that's been in the works. My very favorite bath bomb maker in the world, the lovely Denise of Fantasy Bath, has created a Time Keeper's Daughter Bath Bomb!

Climbing the steps of the tower, something she had done every morning since her mother had passed away years before, she gazed across the city she called her home. She could see the largest clock tower in the distance, through a silvery cloud of lifting haze. Her fingers found her throat and rubbed the stones of the necklace that was her legacy.

She paused for a moment, studying the majestic tower, which gleamed a dull bronze in the pale light of the breaking dawn. It pealed a cascade of sweet, clear tones, like running water or tinkling chimes. Any moment, the city would come alive.

But this was her favorite time. Those few moments alone when all was quiet. She watched the merchants open their shops and stalls, each with the hope of good day of trade. Rich resins from the orient and the spicy wild roses that only grew in the black soil of the nearby mountain foothills.

As she gazed upon the sleeping world, just yawning awake, and she thought of what the future would hold. She knew she would be taught things never spoken of in the schools of her town. She would learn the secrets of the clocks, the magic between the ticks and the tocks and deep brass tolls. She would learn to bend and shape time to her liking, to visit places she had only glimpsed in the reverie of her dreams. And her father would teach her-- the first girl to be passed this hidden knowledge.

The amber stones of her necklace warmed beneath her fingers. She brought them to her lips and kissed them. She took one last look at the city and turned to ascend the winding stairs.

FURBALL SALE at Sihaya Designs!

Sihaya Designs is having a FURBALL SALE! What is a furball sale, you ask? It is a sale to benefit my three little kittens, Olive, Nox, and Mim. Let me tell you a story...

Once upon a time, there was a jewelry designer named Christina. In the Spring of '09, she went to Albuquerque, NM with her boyfriend, Jason, who had a three-month job assignment there. In the back yard of the house they rented was a kitty colony, including two tiny newborn kittens...

Once Jason and I figured the kittens were about eight weeks old, we scooped 'em up, and to the vet they went. Coincidentally, that was the same week that Jason and I got engaged-- we became a family so fast. We named one (a boy) Squeaky, and the other (a girl) Olive. And pretty soon, they were driving cross country with us back to Maryland. They were very excited about cows.

Unfortunately, we'd had them less than a month when Squeaky passed away very suddenly. The vet who performed an exam said he had a heart arhythmia. We were devastated. Our Squeakerboy had touched our lives so much in the short time we had him. But we also had Olive, and after a month of grieving, we adopted a new buddy for her at the BARCS animal shelter in Baltimore.

Behold: Nox!

Nox barely weighed four pounds when we brought him home. He was all skin and bones and giant bat ears. But he was very very lovey. Also, very sick. To the vet he went, and after two weeks of TLC and meds, he had gained some weight and could breathe again. There was joy in the land.

In the time between, Jason and I had our civil ceremony. Nox went to the vet to get neutered. And on that day, I was sitting in my office, working on shiny things for you guys-- I heard a kitten crying. I ran to the living room to check on Olive, and she was just as confused. I looked out the window, and there was Mim, an Olive lookalike who couldn't have been older than four months.

Magical, mystical, marvellous Miss Mim.

It was raining and she looked scared and hungry. What was I to do? She ran in, gobbled up food, used the litter, and then promptly fell asleep in my lap. We put up signs all around the neighborhood to find her family, but after two weeks, we decided she needed to go to the vet for all of her usual kitten shots and tests. It's looking quite likely that Mim is a permanent fixture in our home-- she's well behaved, affectionate, and gets along well with Nox & Olive.

Unfortunately, Mim's arrival brought a significant drain on our wallets. She brought fleas (meaning we had to treat all three kitties and our home), she was sick on top of that (luckily, better now) and got the other two sick. She still needs to be spayed and get booster shots. Poor Olive is recovering from an icky case of conjunctivitis, and Noxman is under the weather, too. We've already shelled out many hundreds of dollars in vet bills this month-- and that's even considering our amazing vet gave us a "Good Samaritan discount."

Spotlight On: Gardens of Whimsy

As some of you know, I am having my wedding ceremony on October 17th. It's going to be a big, festive shindig, with my new husband and I exchanging our public vows in front of our friends and loved ones at the Maryland Renaissance Festival. The party to follow will be a veritable spice box, with bellydancers, delicious Middle Eastern food, and a gorgeous Autumnal cupcake tower. We're also attempting to do this on a relatively small budget, as the idea of a big white wedding didn't really suit either of us. And when it came time to select a bouquet, I wanted faux flowers-- something that would stay vibrant and lovely forever.

Would you believe that this beautiful bouquet cost me about 1/3 what a comparable live flower bouquet would cost? No? I didn't either. It's SO beautiful! Her work is so lovely that I also sprang for the Harvest Rose clip in her shop... methinks the Nicolette might be next.

This gemstone was one of the earliest used to create fire. Useful for divination, the Mayans would scry using large polished slabs of it. Jewelry made with this stone was quite popular during the Victorian era. Some believe it helpful in warding off crocodile attacks, others that it will give you enhanced energy and stamina-- but it is perhaps best known for its shielding properties. Carry some of this to ward off negativity!

On ethics and intellectual property

It is hard to create anything truly unique in jewelry. Inevitably, artists find themselves working with similar styles, especially as suppliers are shared and trends abound. But those of us who are truly concerned with matters of ethics and respect in the artistic community find ways to negotiate these similarities that honor our fellow artists.

Today, I had my first experience with artistic dishonesty. In my recent update, I posted several intent necklaces that have tiny bottles filled with herbs, oils, and gemstones. Now, I know that intent necklaces are common. My friend Kythryne at Wyrding Studios makes beautiful ones of stone and wire. Other sellers have done bottle necklaces. I had hoped to make mine unique to me and my style of design.

In searching for a supplier for the variety of herbs I'd need, in June 2009, I turned to a popular Etsy seller of metaphysical items. I shared with her my idea and asked if she'd be interested in a partnership. She responded yes, and that she would allow me to purchase herbs from her for this venture.

Flash forward to two weeks ago. She declined my wholesale offer because my prices were not the price point she was looking for. Fine and well. I thanked her and placed another order.

This morning, I found that she had duped my idea-- down to the bottles and name used. Though not gem-studded, she had undercut me by half. She claims that her line had been in the works for six months, and yet she had neglected to mention this and the similarities between her product and my product in the entire month we had been discussing my product as a potential partnership-- and wherein I shared my naming and design plans.

This is absolutely unethical, and, I feel, completely dishonest. In plain language-- why would someone entertain the notion of partnership and/or wholesale if they had allegedly been planning a nearly identical item for several months? Her silence on the matter, as well as the timing of the release of her item-- two weeks after viewing my product and declining a wholesale agreement with me-- are both incredibly suspect.

I find myself incredibly let down by a fellow practitioner today. This is my first true "wind out of the sails" experience since I took my business full time, and truly, I don't know how to respond other than to call out the dishonesty for the bald-faced lying it is. Well, that and keeping very thorough records of purchases, correspondence, and screencaps. I am nothing if not an extremely detail-oriented Virgo. I will say nothing that I cannot back up with time-stamped evidence.

For this reason, I will resolve to remain steadfast in respecting the intellectual property of others. The wonderful Beth of Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, one of my ethical role models, once said "I have never in my life stepped on someone else's face to make a buck" and I strive to always follow her example.

Your ethics matter. As an artist, at the end of the day, all you have is your integrity. Never compromise that.

Addendum: After I pointed out to her explicitly that she was using the name with which I had furnished her for my product, she said she would change the name of hers. Well, she did. From "Fortuna" to "Fortunas." That's right, she added an 's.' Her conduct thus far has been in such bad faith, I can't even bring myself to be properly shocked. Integrity fail.

Editor's note: it has come to my attention that the seller in question has received one email about this. I am removing identifying information as of 9pm EST 7/22/09. I appreciate the support, but I would like to make sure all correspondence to her on this topic remains straighforward and blunt, but in no way malicious or hateful. With all things in magic, what goes around comes around, and I'd rather not a heaping helping of angry spite splat my windshield anytime soon, you know? Please do NOT contact this seller about this matter. Thank you.

I recently bought two shirts from Lisa's handprinted clothing shop Ellembee. Her designs are simple, but never plain! The design that goes into each shirt is so beautiful that I wanted them all. One of the shirts I picked up is this floral tank in a very springlike shade of celadon green:

In person, the design is exquisitely done, the colors true to depiction, and the 98% cotton/ 2% spandex blend very soft to the touch.

To my delight, she also has a range of long-sleeved shirts as well, so I can look stylish as the weather gets chilly in the fall. Given Lisa's exceptional customer service, I'm sure to be a repeat customer.

I am a huge fan of The Candy Thief's gorgeous felt headbands. Sunset Labradorite

This afternoon, I'm looking for commission components this afternoon... I have a couple of interesting requests this month-- prayer beads, a menarche gift, and a necklace to mark graduation. Two of my recent commissions have required me to search for high quality gems, and in doing so of course I found something that I needed to have for myself. Well, maybe not for myself to keep, but certainly to work with.

I love labradorite of pretty much all kinds, but sometimes sunset labradorite is stunning like none other. When I saw this piece, I had a synaesthesia moment-- walking down the street, home from the library, feeling magic seep from the church walls and the cracks in the sidewalk. Watching the sun go down over the park, the sky pastel and luminous. Hearing Samuel Barber's "Sure On This Shining Night."

I'm sure I've posted this before, but this is the closest I've come to putting it into words and even it doesn't capture the full feeling of it. I think that night was the first time I concretely felt what so many people call "faerie," which isn't to say literal faeries, so much as the understanding that there is another world, a shimmering world, all about and underneath our own.

When High Summer Comes to South Baltimore

When high summer comes to South Baltimore, the sun stays out until past eight in the evening. Time was, old mothers would gather on their front stoops, chattering over steaming mugs of decaf coffee until the light above faded quietly into hues of hushed rose and blue high above the soft hills of Riverside Park. Nowadays, those mothers are fading as well, their comforting stoops usurped by slick twentysomethings in suits with starched collars who carve up the aging row homes, selling the shells when they’re through. Little children don’t run up and down Henry Street much these days.

But when I was young, the very moment the temperature rose above fifty-five degrees, the sound of Nikes slapping pavement would rise above the ever-present motor-hum of East Fort Avenue, echoing down cement alleyways. I’d be out the door, a short stack of books underarm, with my brother trailing after, just a tiny wisp of a boy with white white hair plainly ignoring his mother’s call not to ruin his new shoes. I remember wishing that my mother would let us cross the narrow streets so I could see the steeple of Saint Mary’s more closely, to explore the diorama garden of the Passion with my eyes and glimpse the lanky teenagers that lazed on the stairs, flashing their tanned legs as they slowly licked cones from the malt shop across the street.

The steeple of Saint Mary’s is a vivid blue, just slightly faded with age and marked by tiny silver grates where the deep tones of the church bell’s Credo could escape and ring out over the city on Sunday mornings. Perched at the top is a bright sapphire star, always the first star in the sky- the star I wished on, my Star Bright.

On humid days, the scent of salt and Old Bay drifts in from the Harbor and mixes with the smell of machinery from Locust point. I would buy the stargazer lilies and inky-blue orchids from the market on Cross Street, where slight Asian men sell the juiciest watermelon you’ve ever tasted- its sweet nectar bursts on your tongue like the fruit of Paradise. I spent those sticky summer days seeking refuge on the second story of my favorite bookstore, reverently fingering the Bible-thin pages of books of Pandora mythology, or afternoons sipping coffee in Mount Vernon, watching as stone fountains splashed crystal water in the shadow of verdigris-spidered cathedrals.

When high summer comes to South Baltimore, the twilight air shimmers with possibility, with anticipation. It reveals all the secrets of the somber alleyways and the bowed oak trees in the parks, showing the intangible magic that hides just beneath the cracking cement. Traversing the labyrinth of familiar streets in graceful reverie, my footsteps would mingle with the rustle of the cherry blossoms and the laughter of the pre-teens on the corners. I would unwrap the mysteries of the living city like the delicate gold foil of a Perugina chocolate, like a precious gift- petal by petal, avenue by avenue, streetlight by streetlight. Some say that you always return to the city you first fall in love with. I have no doubt that this is true- I only hope that it is that same city I left behind, the city I loved sure on that shining night.

That's what I felt when I saw this piece, so I laid the money down. I don't know what I am going to do with it quite yet, but it will be special. I have another piece-- a smooth, schiller laden sunstone-- that is set aside for similar purposes, and it hasn't finished whispering yet.

Spotlight On: NightBlooming

On Etsy, one of my favorite sellers is the magnificent Mel of NightBlooming. She specializes in hair accessories-- hairsticks, ketylos, pins, barrettes, and even hair washes and salves. I have worked with her more than once on custom designs, and the result has never been anything short of spectacular. The sticks above were one of my commissions, and I still wear them regularly.

Another thing about Mel's work, other than the fantastic workmanship, is that I felt a kinship with her shop-- we often pull from many of the same fantastic and mythological sources in our jewelry. She has an uncanny knack for distilling the essence of a concept or energy into a piece of art.

Metal Options::

Mixed Metal Subscription-- sterling silver, 14kgoldfilled, gunmetal, brass, and copper. Breaks down to roughly $19/month, including domestic shipping-- internationals to be quoted separately.

Sterling Silver Subscription-- this may include one month of earrings with a sterling silver earwire- the wire and other components will likewise be primarily sterling silver, though on occasion may include other metals for accent or oxidized sterling silver. Breaks down to roughly $25/month, including domestic shipping-- internationals to be quoted separately.

Other Materials::

I will use glass, pearls, semi-precious gems, gemstones feathers, crystal, clock parts, or whatever else strikes my fancy. The story behind Sihaya Designs:

When I was about ten years old, my Aunt Linda taught me how to bead. I remember the first time she took me into a bead shop-- I think my magpie lust was born right then and there. I remember watching her string beads together, and playing with the ones she was generous enough to let me have. But as most hobbies you have when you're young, it got pushed to the wayside while I dabbled in other things.

In the Winter of 2006, thirteen years later, I found myself seeking out a way to express myself creatively. I had time on my hands and needed a way to fill it. I found myself in the bead aisle of my local craft store, and decided to give it a whirl. At first, I was making jewelry for myself, and then people started asking me where I got my necklaces. Then they started asking if they could buy my necklaces. So it was in March, 2007 that I set up shop with Etsy to make my jewelry publically available. First, it was glass and string. Then base metal wire. Then fine metals and precious gems. Now, a year and a half later, I'm ready to take the plunge and create jewelry full-time!

I am so blessed to have the opportunity to do what I love full-time. Sihaya Designs is soon to be offering jewelry retail, custom commissions, and also a limited wholesale line. It's a lot of growth, and I'm loving every minute of it!

Right now, I'm in the middle of preparing for the transition-- I've been working with Rebecca of STypeCreative to create a website, business cards, and packaging that are uniquely me. I've been preparing to work from a home office (working in one's pajamas-- could there be a better life?). I've been brushing up on all the accounting know-how. I am ready to get this show on the road! Is it November yet?

Hello, and thanks for visiting Sihaya Designs Jewelry's brand spankin' new blog. I'm Christina, and I love to craft things of beauty. I create artistic jewelry with fine gemstones, funky glass, brass, copper, sterling silver, and gold.

I've had this business for over a year now, and I've just made the decision to take the plunge full time! Beginning November 2008, I will be self-employed, working on retail orders and scheming up special designs for wholesale as well as continuing commissioned works. I'm getting an official site, new packaging, new business cards, the works! Exciting things are happening at Sihaya Designs.
